Q10: In this world it's usually all you can hope for to get people to tolerate you. Expecting them to accept you for who you are is more trouble than it's worth.

Skuld: You are so hilariously cynical.

Q10:Living in peace is all about lowering expectations. The sooner we realize that the better off we'll be.

Star Wars Celebration IV and Eleni's visit!

The lowdown on all our shenanigans: here.

"Who would bomb threat a Star Wars convention?"

"Someone who was really unhappy with the prequels."

~Skuld and Eleni, about the Star Wars C4 bomb threat

Pirates 3

...was interesting. Epic. Better than two, but definitely not better than one. Definitely worth seeing, though.

Unfortunately I think my love of pirates will forever be influenced by One Piece, because in my mind, the Straw Hats are the only ones who have that pirate thing down pat. >3

Hitting up Star Wars Celebration IV tomorrow/today! :D *so pumped*

"All long-haired cats belong to the Sith." -Q10

So much to do tonight, so little time. At this point my "Darth Skuld" costume is about 98% done, pending the bun extensions which may or may not work out. So far, Katie Bair's no-sew wefts technique has been failing me, partly to my own incompetence, but mostly because the caulk I bought is crap. If I end up shedding all over, I hope to at least run up to a Vader cosplayer and shed all over him. If the bun extensions don't work, well, at least I still have the buns.

You can guess from my description already that my Sith costume will probably look like its been designed by somebody Chinese who's into anime/manga. :p Whoa. NO WAI! (It's the cutest Sith costume you've ever seen, but that's just part of the deception.) You've been warned.)

Anyways, tonight is going to be a fun race against time. A friend of mine, Eleni, is arriving at LAX tonight for C4. My Pirates of the Caribbean 3 tickets are also tonight. She's getting in around 11pm, the show is at midnight. So let's see how fast she can run to the car (thank god she doesn't have any check-in baggage) and how fast I can speed down the 405 (please let there be parking in the area, please) to make it to the movie in time. Thank god Jeremy's waiting in line for us. ¬_¬ Go Speed Racer, Go.

On another note, finished Season 3 of Babylon 5 last night. Gee whiz, Sheridan, I hope that wasn't a Sarlaac pit you just jumped into.

Wow, it's been a while since I last put together a costume. Almost a year, I think. @_@

Darth Skuld is about 95% done. X3 Hooray!

My horoscope, according to The Onion:

You'll cry because you have no shoes until you see a man who has no shame stretching out his anus to the size of a soup bowl and putting pictures of it on the Internet.

The Onion is predicting that I will run into goatse on t3h internets sometime soon. Let's see how long it takes when I surf /b.

Please don't suck. Oh, Pirates 3, please oh please don't suck like Spiderman 3 and Matrix: Revolutions. :/

I have it on good faith from my friend, who's seen it already, that it doesn't suck. Of course, he's a bit biased because he was an extra in the movie (and apparently appears in it in a few scenes in the background), but OH PLEASE. Don't suck.

"If life gives you lemons, chop off your testicles."

All the good JMS did in "War Without End" was almost completely undone by the subsequent episodes. :( Especially the one with the Zarg. =_= I believe the relationship I have with Babylon 5 can only be best described as "it's complicated."

Also, where the hell did those two Vorlons come from that accompanied Valen on Babylon 4? WTF? Q10 has the theory that they came free with the time stabilizers.

Should I even bother watching season 5?

Star Wars Celebration IV in a week. And my cosplay is nowhere near done. =__= Ugh.

Oh, nostalgia

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Oh, nostalgia. :3 This was one of things I really enjoyed watching as a kid. It's taken me until now to realize that one of the main characters was actually Anthony Wong, who is the best live-action Bunta that ever there was. (Sadly, Jay Chou is the worst live-action Takumi that ever there was. :( Talk about shitty casting.)

I think I spent more time as a kid watching bad awesome wuxia than I did watching cartoons. This might actually still hold true today, actually. @_@ An internets to the person who finds me a place to buy the DVD/VCDs. (I've already found the torrent, but there are no seeders. :/)

Here's an article from the english version of the Mainichi Daily News about Japanese yaoi fangirls (fujoshi). The article really scratches the surface of a lot of the questions I have about fandom, male homoeroticism, and Japan.

Why do girls like t3h gay? Are these the same reasons why boys like t3h lesbos? Why is a derivative work (something based off an already established series) more popular than something that is original or a relationship that has already been established in canon? What drives a yaoi fangirl to slash together two non-canonically gay characters? Why are so many self-described "yaoi fangirls" also self-described lesbians (at least in American fandom)? What social changes lie at the heart of the fascination with homoeroticism? Are they different in America and Japan? Does yaoi/BL in Japan promote the idea of homosexuality being "okay?" Is it furthering the visibility and acceptableness of homosexuality in Japan? Are the depictions of love and relationships in BL/yaoi an expression of the Japanese women's ideal? Are the BL depictions of love and relationships influencing Japanese womens' expectations for their own, real life relationships? Are these same fujoshi the "parasite singles" who refuse to date, marry, and bear children (thereby contributing to the Aged Society Problem/Koureika syakaimondai in Japan)?

DISCUSS

Finished watching the first part of "War Without End." Godammit, the second part is on another disc and is not likely to arrive until either Thursday or Friday. :( Curses!

That said, I think I'm really growing a fondness for B5, despite its obvious flaws. The whole Sinclair/Babylon 4 thing is actually really, really cool. Kudos, JMS.

If you missed this, I think it just may be the best Colbert Report segment EVER.

I'm home! :D ACen was totally awesome, one of the best cons I've been to. Lots of great moments, great friends, great events, and just overall one of the most fun cons I've attended. It's hard to say whether it was the con itself or the company, or some mixture of both. This further reinforces my idea that ACen is one of the best cons ever.

Some highlights, full report to come later:

- The offering I made to the porcelain gods on Thursday night, the beginning of the weekend, sure as hell paid off.
- I think I'm going to finally start watching Avatar.
- I sweet talked the hotel personnel into giving us a suite. A sweetass suite. That's what we get for them overbooking us. Worth the 5 hour wait to get our room.
- Nightow was the cutest thing there, I swear. Very modest and down-to-earth. I got him to sign my favorite page of Trigun Max 11, and I also got confirmation that yes, Doctor Conrad is based off Patrick Stewart. FTW!!
- Mr. Nabeshin is coming out with a new show! Mr. Nabeshin is also really awesome.
- You can never lose with 300xYatta crossover cosplay.
- ALIVE and GO!!! are officially the best Naruto songs ever. Discussion over.

Shoutouts to:
Mikhail for getting me through the prereg line. Dennis, who shall hereafter be known as "P. Dennis," for Wii Warioware hilarity. ElvenShadow and Tony for playing games and drinking with us. John for going to the rave with me and Lins and having a great time. Emo for being next door the whole time without either of us realizing it. Zach (Stripper Vash) and Jim (Knives) for being the best and cutest damn Vash and Knives ever. Legato-girl and Jim again, for the cute Knives/Legato kiss we got for Roni's Sharpie. Squee. :3 Jeff who is the best damn Iori cosplayer I know, and who is also really hot when he makes out with other guys. And my favorite ACen Idol contestants, Soy Sauce and Sean Chen, who sounded absolutely great. RikkuX and StarofKaos, it was great seeing you guys! I fear it may be a while until we see each other again. And last but also most, the regular crew: Lins, Roni and Ed who are the bestest friends a little not-like-those-freaks fangirl could hope for. Thanks for picking me up, hanging out, and being pals. LOVE TO YOU.

Off to ACen, in Chicago. :3 Hopefully I'll get to meet Yasuhiro Nightow and tell him how much the Trigun ending just blows balls.

But the real reason I'm going? Friends and booze. In that order.

Jane Fonda is my new hero. She is quite possibly the only person in the entire world who is able to make Stephen Colbert uncomfortable.

Wow. Damn.

Saw Vienna Teng live tonight for the second time, at the Hotel Cafe. She played a very nice set, all of the best songs from her "Dreaming Through the Noise" album, as well as great rearrangements of songs like "Gravity" (with a great transition into "Unwritten Letter No. 1") and "Harbor." She still didn't quite sound as on as her Live at Little Fox recording (one day, hopefully, I'll attend a Vienna concert that long), but I don't think I'll ever be able to be not-in-NorCal and hear her perform like that. :D

One day, I'd like to hear the source of her inspiration for songs like "Blue Caravan" and "Whatever You Want" (she claims it's for Milton from Office Space, but there's a deeper, real reason, I'm sure of it). Maybe I'll drop her an e-mail or something.

There are ants in my bed. D:< I woke up this morning and there was an ant under my pillow. I squished it, looked back 15 minutes later and there were 4 ants on my bed.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!

STUPID FUCKING ANTS!!

We've had an ant problem in the apartment for about 3 months now, and only a couple weeks ago started controlling the population with ant traps. Now that it's been about 3 days since I last saw ants in the bathroom and kitchen, I think they've taken it into their heads to migrate into my room, the loft.

>_< This really annoys me a lot.

Anybody in the LA area have any boric acid, or know where to get some? How about ant gel? You know, the sweet stuff with some boric acid mixed in. Help. ;_;

ACen

ACen is just a week away, holy shit. And they haven't even gotten me my badge yet. Those bastards told me they'd mail mine over. *annoyed* I guess I'll have to pick it up at the con, and it's going to take for-fucking-ever. *sigh* I've grown out of anime cons. I think I've seriously grown out of them. I think it's a combination of contempt, annoyance, and just plain growing up. I only use them as an excuse nowadays to get people together from faraway places so we can hang out and get shitfaced.

For those of you interested, it seems the schedule of events has already been posted.

I guess the only good thing I've realized is that Yasuhiro Nightow is scheduled to appear in the ACen Idol room, which means I may be able to place myself in a Position of Awesome to get him to sign my favorite Trigun Maximum pages. If I'm lucky, I may even be drunk by then.

This is the best criticism I've seen to date on my PNAS paper:

The article does not note one semantic feature that surely influences Russian speakers' differentiation of shades of blues. The word "goluboy" is the most common way of designating a gay person in that language.

See my article on "Color Symbolism" in Encyclopedia of Homosexuality at Williamapercy.com

Best, W. R. Dynes

My Russian vocabulary has now expanded to two words: "no" and "fag." X3

Quick thoughts on Spiderman 3 before bedtime:

1) Not as good as the first two, and yes, that includes the retarded nuclear reaction they drowned in water
2) ups and downs, pros and cons. More "meh" moments than the previous two movies.
3) I'm not sure they really needed Sandman in there. :/ But then again, he provided an excellent excuse for...
4) HARRY/PETER OTP!! (Was anybody else thinking Sora/Riku with the way they were fighting? *fans self*)
5) Dorky!Harry is really cute, but Emo!Peter?! WTF IS THIS FAGGOTRY!
6) Topher Grace pulled off Eddie Brock/Venom pretty well.
7) HARRY/PETER OTP!!

I need all the Harry/Peter slash my little fangirly hands can find. :3

Just got back from a Graduate Student Association (GSA) speed dating event. I figured I'd go since it's a good way to meet people. I'm not really a bar/club pickup sort of person, since I'm very socially awkward unless I have something to talk about, and hey, it gets me out. So this was the first time the GSA was holding a gay-friendly type of event, so I figured I'd go and scope out the girls, who'd probably number in the single digits. Well, I think there were about 11 lesbian women there out of a pool of about 200 people total, so I guess I can't ask for any more than that.

I think what I'm really looking for is a nice, dorky girl. Somebody who'll understand if I don't want to go out tonight because I want to play Jade Empire/Final Fantasy/Insert Game Here. Somebody to watch some anime with, somebody to watch some movies with, somebody to nerd with. I think everybody's a little nerdy inside, just some types of nerdiness (like watching sports statistics) are more socially acceptable.

Overall, I think a lot of the girls there were really nice. Most of them seemed to know each other already from the LBGT club, which I don't really hang out at. More on why I don't hang out there later. If some of them were sort of dorky they certainly didn't talk about it, but I totally advertised with my [adult swim] shirt. (I figure, if I'm looking for the right sort of person, they'll know my shirt and say something.)

Anyways, nice people, mostly. I don't know if they're people I'd form relationships with, but hey, it's a foot in the door on the community and at this moment that's what I need.

Now to the ranty bits, like why I don't hang out at LBGT clubs. I HATE self-righteous gay people. I tend to label myself as a lesbian, but in all honesty, I learn a little on the bi side too. (If I didn't find cock hot, I wouldn't be a yaoi fan. And since I'm a yaoi fan, I have to find cock hot, and I do.) What I really hate is lesbians who--when they hear I've dated guys before--sort of give you this look of disgust that says, "Ew, you're a breeder too?" I FUCKING HATE THAT LOOK. I hate that attitude of "you have to choose sides, you're either on their side or our side." I hate how every aspect of sexuality is like fighting a war, how they're militant about it and just as closed-minded and unwavering as the side they're fighting against. UGH. *bangs head against wall* They try to make me feel guilty about being bi and liking boys too (and especially boys on boys), and I hate it when somebody guilts me about something that's out of my control. I hate that "you should be like this" superiority, because guess what, THE WORLD AIN'T BLACK AND WHITE. And what's wrong with simply going, "gender doesn't matter?" Isn't that what the whole revolution was about in the first place? I hate people who've lost sight of that, who've got so caught up in the whole meaning of "gay" and "lesbian" that they forget that "queer" has more connotations than just about sexuality.

*sighs* There's supposedly some lesbian party or something on Saturday. I kind of want to go and meet people, but I'm also kind of leery because I don't want to be ostracized because "ZOMG, she's bi." There's an M:TG Timespiral booster draft tournament that day too, so I guess I have an excuse if I need one. :/

Oh well. Have a phallic meme. There is great humor in this, considering the history I've had with popsicles and joking about them with my friends.

Which random phallic object are you?

Harry Potter and the Eagle of Truthiness

ending is abrupt, but seriously...decently well-written considering that I can imagine Stephen Colbert saying every word.

WAHOO! :D

The research I did in freshman and sophomore year of college has finally gotten published. Wahoo! Here's the lowdown.
