Somebody Told Me

Does anybody know what the conventional interpretation of "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers is? D: I've had several discussions with various roommates and friends in the car every time the song comes on the radio, and the conclusion I have always jumped to (and some people seem to agree with me) is that the narrator/singer realizes that he might be potentially gay, because he's still got the hots for his ex-girlfriend who has, since they've broken up, gotten a sex change:

...Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

What's also curious is that the gender of the second person (you) is never fully described in the lyrics of the song. So 'you' could either be a man or a woman. Interestingly enough, I always assumed that the 'you' was a female, though upon reading the lyrics in text without music, my default assumption could be erroneous. I wonder if the assumption of the gender of the second person has anything to do with the gender of the listener (me and my friends who are hearing it on the radio).

Anyways, I'm curious what everybody else who reads this blog thinks about the lyrics of the song and what they mean.

DISCUSS.
